WANTED - packaging offenders

November 29th, 2006 by trinatune

Have you had enough of excess packaging? Well now you can do something about it! Environment Victoria is running the DUMP (Damaging and Useless Materials in Packaging) Awards, which aim to expose damaging and useless materials in packaging.

Environment Victoria is calling on nominations for products that are either unnecessarily packaged, packed in many layers of wrapping, made up of unrecyclable materials or misleading in their disposal messages.

The awards aim to highlight how extra packaging is damaging the environment. Every year 17.4 million tonnes of rubbish is dumped in Australian landfill. Besides landfill, this waste also ends up on our streets as litter or in our water ways.

Environment Victoria campaigner Jenny Henty says that we pay for the disposal of this packaging at the check-out and through our rates. “It’s time brand owners and supermarkets, which profit from these products, take more responsibility for the packaging waste they create.”

Nominations close on 1 December 2006, and the winners will be announced in January 2007. View last year’s winners.
