Follow the stars when buying appliances

February 1st, 2007 by trinatune

energy_star_label.jpgI have just finished writing an article on buying energy wise appliances. Basically, all white goods (fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners) must have an energy efficiency label.

It’s pretty simple stuff really - the more stars on the label, the more energy efficient. But did you know that by improving your appliance by just one star you can save between 10 and 30per cent on your running costs, and loads of greenhouse gas emissions? Check out my article for more information.

And if you’re buying a tumble dryer, ask to see “European style” models. These collect water from the load into a container, which is then emptied, or is plumbed to empty itself. Most dryers in Australia waste a lot of power as they don’t remove the moisture, an inefficient method of drying. You’ll know if you’re using a regular dryer, as it vents hot wet air into your laundry, the “European style” does not, which is better for your laundry room and your power bill.
