Switch off your lights this Saturday

March 26th, 2007 by trinatune

earht_hour_banner_th.jpgDon’t forget it’s Earth Hour this Saturday (March 31) so if you’re in Sydney turn off your lights between 7.30 and 8.30pm as a sign of your commitment to reduce climate change.

It’s a pretty simple ask and one that environment group WWF is using to kick off its campaign to reduce Sydney’s greenhouse emissions by 5 per cent in 2007. Through Earth Hour, WWF plans to demonstrate how simple actions can make the world of difference if everyone takes part.

Although Earth Hour is just in Sydney, WWF is encouraging people across Australia to also show their support by turning off their lights at 7.30pm local time.

What will you be doing this Earth Hour? I am planning a nice candle light dinner with the family.

Love the Earth Hour concept and cant wait to glimpse the stars from my suburban back yard. We will be dining by candlelight and listening to the sweet music of the crickets. Id like to imagine a huge dimming of the city’s glow during that hour and the city skyline impossible to make out. It is good to remember to actually disconnect electrical cords as devices just put on standby still use a huge amount of electricity…

I’m really looking forward to it. We’re planning dinner by candlelight too. We can see hundreds of other apartments from our inner-city apartment, so I’m hoping we see lots and lots of lights go out and maybe a few more starts than usual!

We walked through Circular Quay for the start of Earth Hour, then attended the WWF fundraiser event.

I started noticing the difference at around World Square, with Ernst & Young having their lights off, then IAG was amazingly dark.

When we got the the Quay, AXA and AMP were both in darkness. A lot of the restaurants around the Quay were also candlelit.

It was both eery and cool and exciting to be walking through the city. You really could notice the difference.

The Earth Hour Flickr group has some great shots. The before and after of Centrepoint is great, as is the blurry one at the end. Although side-by-side they don’t look as impressive, when you overlay one after the other the difference is amazing!

What’s cool is a lot of the businesses remained in darkness all weekend - meaning an even bigger energy saving.

Can’t wait to see the stats for energy consumption reduction - rumour has it they’re quite impressive…
